The UNITED LUTHERAN APPEAL (ULA) is a joint effort of the Metropolitan Washington, D.C. Synod and thirteen institutions and agencies related to the synod or our congregations. These institutions and agencies engage in a large range of educational, outdoor and social ministries. The 2002 Metro D.C. Synod Assembly launched the effort.

Hosting an Appeal Sunday is an opportunity for congregations to gather financial support and educate members about these ministries active on our behalf across the region. Many congregations choose to hold an Appeal Sunday near observance of Transfiguration, an observance in the church calendar which often falls in February.

Prayer by the ULA’s first coordinator, the Rev. George Handley, written in March 2003
Transfigure us, O Lord, that with Jesus we may ever seek to witness and minister in the world that surrounds us. Help us to be both messengers and active participants in the mission you give your church to speak and practice truth and hope in the gift that is your world, for we seek to be both faithful disciples and grateful stewards. In Christ’s strong name, we pray. Amen.
