Creation Care: Ideas for moving ahead

Group 236

“It felt like a movement of the spirit that [the ‘Energy Stewardship‘ resolution] passed with such good support, and I greenchurch85heard many people buzzing about how their congregations could take steps in their stewardship,” said the Rev. Sarah Scherschligt, Associate Pastor of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Gaithersburg, of a 2010 Synod Assembly decision in a note to participants in a workshop she led during the gathering. “People around the country celebrated with us as they prepare to take such similar resolutions forward.  We are part of a growing movement of congregations and synods committing to environmental stewardship.  Together we answer God’s first calling to humanity to take care of the earth.  What a joy!”

Ideas discussed at the workshop include:

  • Start with Scripture
  • Tie in with youth work
  • Make global connections
  • Use facilities creatively – increase rentals, install solar roofs, more
  • Use visual and oral testimonies about natural disasters
  • Lift up the blessing of simplicity – especially during an economic downturn
  • Hold yard sales – reuse reuse reuse
  • Bring it home
