DESCRIPTION:The Metro D.C. Synod RIC Team is participating in the D.C. Pride Parade on Saturday\, June 8\, and hosting a booth at the D.C. Pride Festival on Sunday\, June 9. There are several ways to get involved and everyone is invited to come and share God’s love and acceptance while meeting some great people! \n\nSaturday\, June 8: \n\nStart the day by helping decorate the Parade Float at Augustana Lutheran Church at 9:00 AM or join in at 3:00 PM to walk or ride in the Parade. \n\nSunday\, June 9: \n\nHelp attend the Synod booth at the Pride Festival by greeting people\, spreading the message of God’s Radical Love for ALL\, giving out items\, and engaging participants in activities. There are shifts available from 11:00 AM–8:00 PM. \nFor those interested in learning more about how to engage\, what language to use\, what to wear\, etc.\, the RIC Team provided a training in May. DESCRIPTION:Registration is now open for “Sacred Ground\,” a 12-session spiritual journey\, grounded in the example of Jesus Christ and the power of scripture\, prayer\, God’s grace\, to help to achieve racial equity. This series is open to all congregations in small groups and to all rostered ministers. \nThrough this series\, you are invited to: \n\nwalk back through history and reflect on the situations and circumstances that have contributed to where we find ourselves today\, including current challenges and divisions.\nreflect on our personal family histories and stories\, as well as important narratives that shape the collective American story.\nwatch documentaries and engage readings to help inform and enlighten.\n\nSacred Ground is a rich and varied curriculum focused on Indigenous\, Black\, Latino\, and Asian Pacific Americans as their histories intersect with European American history. The curriculum also provides historical information on how racism has impacted the ELCA and the Episcopal Churches. \nAfter watching the documentaries and engaging the readings\, groups will gather on Zoom every other week for conversations—all while grounded in our call to faith\, hope\, and love. Past participants have said that the Sacred Ground experience is transformational and life giving. DESCRIPTION:Join Racial Equity Team member Duke Taylor on Thursday\, September 19\, for an online Leadership Academy workshop at 7:00 PM to learn how to navigate conflict through Crucial Conversations: Techniques for When Opinions Vary. \nThere are issues that everyone purposely\, or unconsciously\, avoids especially regarding race\, political issues\, or sexual identity. With social media and the news cycle fueling discord\, conversations can veer unexpectedly into highly emotional topics with the potential to spark conflict and threaten relationships. If a church wishes to address such issues\, the possibility for high-conflict conversations emerges no matter how loving its intention is. \nCrucial Conversations is a set of techniques to use during an interaction where opinions vary and emotions run strong to maintain a relationship rather than irreparably damage it. These conversations might occur anytime and anywhere when we touch upon sensitive topics\, especially when least expected. This workshop will focus on recognizing when a conversation becomes crucial\, and introduce ways to prepare your heart by mastering your story\, making it safe to state your path while exploring others\, and moving to action while facing tough challenges. \nPlease register to attend here.

This gathering will offer a space for reflection\, rejuvenation\, and connection with fellow ministers\, equipping you with the strength and inspiration needed to embrace the Advent season with renewed passion and purpose. We look forward to sharing this meaningful experience with you as we prepare together for the joyous journey ahead. \nThe Advent Preaching Workshop & Worship will be on Wednesday\, October 16\, at Saint Luke Lutheran Church in Silver Spring\, MD. \nSchedule of Events \n\n\n\n9:00–9:45 AM | Registration and Gathering \n10:00–11:30 AM | Session 1 (Luke 21:25-36 and Luke 3:1-6)\n11:45 AM | Worship with Rev. An optional offering of $25 per person is suggested to cover costs and lunch.\n  \n\nReverend Heidi Neumark\n \nReverend Neumark is a semi-retired ELCA pastor who spent most of her pastoral ministry in New York City\, first for 19 years at Transfiguration Lutheran Church in the South Bronx and later for 20 years at Trinity Lutheran Church of Manhattan/Iglesia Luterana Trinidad. \nPastor Neumark grew up in New Jersey. She completed her undergraduate studies at Brown University and received her Master of Divinity from the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. She spent a year at an ecumenical seminary in Argentina\, where she also worked with Servicio Paz y Justicia\, a human rights organization. \nPastor Neumark was a founding member of South Bronx Churches\, an ecumenical community organizing group that trained local leaders\, built hundreds of low-cost homes\, and established a top-ranked public high school. \nIn addition to pastoring and speaking at events around the country\, Pastor Neumark also enjoys writing. Her experiences in congregational and community ministry in the Bronx led to a highly acclaimed book\, Breathing Space: A Spiritual Journey in the South Bronx (Beacon Press). Her second book is about the discovery of her Jewish roots and the story of her grandfather\, who died at the Terezin concentration camp: Hidden Inheritance: Family Secrets\, Memory and Faith. Her latest book was released in 2020: Sanctuary: Being Christian in the Wake of Trump.  \nPastor Neumark is enjoying her retirement by serving a 6-point parish near her home in Kingston\, NY. She has been married to her husband\, Gregorio\, for 41 years\, and they have two adult married children and three beautiful grandchildren.

SUMMARY:Boundary & Racial Justice Training
DESCRIPTION:Rostered Ministers of the Metro D.C. Synod are invited to complete their required annual Boundary Training and biennial Racial & Social Justice Training through United Lutheran Seminary. Trainings are offered online and in-person at the Gettysburg campus in October and November. Topics and dates are: \n\nLGBTQIAS+ Training | October 6 & 7\, 8 and November 12\nRacial Justice Training | October 9\, 13 & 14 and November 13\nBoundary Training | October 10\, 20 & 21 and November 14\n\nThe ELCA requires these trainings for all rostered ministers. Boundary training is required every year\, while specialized training focused on justice topics like racial justice\, gender justice\, and LGBTQIA+ justice are required every two years. These trainings can be fulfilled through whichever organization a rostered minister chooses and reported to the synod. Due to proximity\, the Metro D.C. Synod shares the offerings from ULS which are offered multiple times a year to allow ministers to complete them on a rolling basis as they are due. \nLearn more and register here.

DESCRIPTION:Registration is now open for Daring to Dream\, a retreat for middle and high school youth on November 15–17 at Potomac Park in Falling Waters\, WV.  All youth in grades 6-12 are invited! Youth will be grouped with other youth of the same age/grade. In addition to the small groups\, large group gatherings will introduce the theme progression through worship and music; games will help form the weekend’s community; and service projects will invite youth to apply what they’re learning to hands-on service.
