Growing Community, One Garden at a Time

In a season when so many are seeking connection, nourishment, and purpose, a simple plot of land in Fairfax, Virginia, is becoming something beautiful. This spring, Bethlehem Lutheran Church partnered with the Pozez Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia to launch a community garden—a vibrant, shared space that not only grows fresh produce, but also deepens relationships between faith communities and serves those most in need.
With support from a $1,000 Congregation Partnership Grant from the Local Ministry Fund, Bethlehem broke ground in April. Pastor Dan Roschke shared, “This is a joyous and collaborative effort with our neighbors at the Pozez Jewish Community Center. These days, we are laying the foundation for a flourishing space, installing a fence, garden boxes, and storage, and establishing pathways to the garden—all while enriching our soil with mulch and hope. Our harvest will nourish local veterans, partnering with Cook for VETS.”
Half of all funds raised through the 2025 Bishop’s Appeal go directly to the Local Ministry Fund, which was created to strengthen the work of congregations and community ministries throughout our Synod. Your generosity supports creative partnerships, practical service, and meaningful outreach like the Fairfax garden project.
By giving to the 2025 Bishop’s Appeal, you help grow more than gardens—you help grow community, compassion, and the church’s witness in the world. Make your gift today, and be part of what’s blooming next.
