Hope for the Hungry: Reformation, D.C.
The emergency food pantry at Lutheran Church of the Reformation in Washington, D.C. has existed for over 30 years, serving their Capitol Hill neighbors with non-perishable food items that are distributes in prepackaged bags to those in need. These “emergency” bags of food can feed a family of four for two days.
Reformation used their Hope for the Hungry grant from the synod to purchase enough food for 32 bags! That’s enough to feed 128 people for two days. The bags include the following:
- Fruit (15 oz)
- Corn (15 oz)
- Green Beans/Peas (15 oz)
- Peanut Butter (18 oz)
- Black Beans (15 oz)
- Tuna (6 oz; preferably in water)
- Oatmeal, Apple Cinnamon
- Saltines (1 lb)
- Spaghetti (1 lb)
- Spaghetti Sauce
- Dried Soup (e.g., ramen)
- Toothpaste (6 oz)
- Dish detergent (12.6 oz)
The pictures below were taken on a food run and bagging session in May 2025, when they were packing enough food for 180 bags!
