Hope for the Hungry: Georgetown, Washington, D.C.

When Georgetown Lutheran Church in Washington, D.C. realized that their turn serving a community meal would fall on July 4, they worried because regular leaders and much of their congregation were planning to be out of town…but their Hope for the Hungry grant made this and so much more possible! The funds from the synod grant allowed them to provide critical food support and connection in three ways that all involved volunteers and feeding folks right where they were, supplementing and adding to their ongoing ministry. In July, they accomplished:

  • Purchasing the main dish for the meal served on July 4, making serving possible and sharing with about 70 hungry folks. Over 14 volunteers helped prepare and serve, a faithful way to spend Independence Day and make a difference in our community!
  • Supporting a meal during an overnight respite program with a neighborhood partner, during stressful and hot days in the city.
  • Adding an additional date, July 19, to a quarterly Sunday service project, making breakfast burritos from scratch.
  • Stocking their kitchen for neighbors experiencing homelessness who come to Georgetown Lutheran Monday-Thursday when they share space as a drop-in center with a neighborhood nonprofit homeless service provider, Georgetown Ministry Center. On burrito-making Sundays, members and guests rolled up their sleeves and joined in after each worship service to make from scratch, individually wrap, and freeze 200 breakfast burritos!
