Racial Equity Team Prayer Petition | July 2026

The Metro D.C. Synod’s Racial Equity Team shares the prayer below for this season of praying with honesty and humility for our nation.

Confession

Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, whose compassion endures forever.

(Silence)

Merciful God, as we consider the aspirations and freedoms that have shaped this nation, we confess that our history is marked by deep wounds and enduring injustice. We have celebrated liberty while denying it too many. We have benefited from systems built upon the theft of Indigenous lands, the enslavement of African peoples, and the exploitation of labor. We confess the scent of racism, both personal and systemic, and the way white supremacy continues to distort our common life.

Forgive us, O God. Free us from the myths of innocence and exceptionalism. Turn us again toward your reign of justice, mercy, and peace. By your spirit, make us a people who tell the truth about our past, repair what has been broken, resist oppression in all its forms, and labor together for the flourishing of all your beloved children. In the name of Jesus Christ, who calls us to repentance and reconciliation, we pray. Amen.

Assurance

Hear this good news: God’s mercy is deeper than our failures and stronger than every power of sin and death. In Jesus Christ, we are not condemned, but instead set free. God‘s grace does not erase history, but empowers us to face it honestly and join in the Spirits’ work of justice healing, and reconciliation. In Christ, you are forgiven. Thanks be to God.
