Feeding Neighbors: Good Shepherd ALX

During the government shutdown beginning February 14, 2026, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers were required to work without pay until after the funding impasse was resolved. During that period of time, they had to continue to meet both their normal expenses (food and shelter) plus the expenses of coming into work every day, such as transportation and childcare.

As in past funding lapses, TSA employees at Dulles airport were operating a food pantry for officers. The government provides space for the pantry but does not buy food or otherwise fund it. The pantry is only possible because of donations from the community. Donations are limited to non-perishable items because the pantry does not have refrigerators.

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Alexandria, VA began collecting items for the TSA pantry since mid-March. Members donated several carloads of non-perishable items that were delivered to the pantry. The synod’s Feeding Our Neighbors Together grant created a unique opportunity for the officers managing the pantry. They could buy perishable items (primarily lunchmeat) to arrive at the airport and distribute them to officers as they were ending their shifts.

Many thanks to all our churches who have helped federal employees during government shutdowns.
