Feeding Neighbors: Saint Luke, Silver Spring, MD

Group 236

Recently, the Synod offered Feeding Our Neighbors Together mini-grants for congregations to feed neighbors in need. We asked congregations to get creative and to share their story with us so that we could disseminate it to the wider synod. When we work together, the ministry possibilities are endless.

On November 24 and 25, Saint Luke Lutheran Church in Silver Spring, MD fed 90 families and about 400 individuals. They were able to extend their existing ministry to feed more people because of the Synod’s grant.

Saint Luke has had a food ministry for over 25 years and they’ve seen an increase in the number of food-insecure individuals. They serve mainly down county (Montgomery) residents, but no one is turned away if they have a referral from a social service agency, school, or health center (and drop-ins are accommodated as supplies hold).

They are able to purchase produce from county farms. In addition, Manna Food Center receives donated produce, and they have benefited from that (this time around they received 100 pounds of ground meat for free). They feel truly blessed!
