Hope for the Hungry: Holy Cross, Herndon, VA

Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Herndon, VA has served as the host site for Lunch for the Soul since March of 2022. This ministry brings together Holy Cross and four other local congregations to provide a hot meal every Wednesday in their fellowship hall for local day laborers and anyone in the community who is in need of food, fellowship, and care. What began as a response to a real and immediate need has become an ongoing ministry of hospitality, dignity, and Christian love.

Lunch for the Soul is about more than serving a meal. Each week, guests are welcomed into a safe and comfortable space where they are treated as valued members of the community. The pastors of the participating congregations take turns offering a Bible study and message centered on God’s love, reminding those who gather that they are seen, known, and beloved. Throughout the year, the ministry also responds to practical needs by collecting and distributing items such as winter coats, toiletries, and other essentials for the day laborer community.

Funds received through the synod’s Hope for the Hungry grant directly supported the continued work of feeding and caring for neighbors through Lunch for the Soul. These resources helped provide nutritious meals, strengthened Holy Cross’ ability to offer consistent hospitality, and supported a ministry that affirms the dignity of people who are too often overlooked. Through this grant, Holy Cross was able to continue sharing not only food, but also welcome, compassion, and the reminder of God’s unfailing love.
