Since adoption by the ELCA Churchwide Assembly in 2011, more than $10 million of the $15 million goal of the ELCA Malaria Campaign has been reached! At this two-and-a-half year mark of the four year effort, 63% of our Metro D.C. Synod congregations have participated, and congregations and individuals have provided more than $268,000 of assistance toward reducing the number of deaths from this preventable, treatable disease.
Malaria concerns in Namibia, location of Companion Synods with our Metro D.C. Synod, have been exacerbated by hunger, particularly due to a severe, long-lasting drought experienced in the country. Namibia has recently been added to the 13 countries in Africa, many additionally plagued by war and violence, where the ELCA Malaria Campaign will be active with Lutheran congregations. Burundi, location of the highest rate of malaria in eastern Africa, joins Namibia as the most recent country additions to campaign efforts.
Creative ideas to engage 100% of our congregations keep coming. Vacation Bible School/camp curricula are anticipated to teach children about malaria and the work being done to eliminate it. New video and posters can be found at www.elca.org/malaria.
Let’s not let the momentum slow!
