Supporting Our Siblings in Christ in Puerto Rico & Virgin Islands

Building Puentes means building bridges

and is the name of a commitment between the Caribbean, Delaware-Maryland and Metro D.C. synods of the ELCA.

Send Your Support Directly to Congregations in the Caribbean

Every congregation in the Caribbean has been affected by Hurricane Fiona after just rebuilding in the wake of Hurricane Maria in 2017. It is devastating to see these communities to continue to suffer. It is encouraging however, to know that while we grieve with them, we can also engage in mutual accompaniment.

Make a special gift to support the congregations and pastors in Puerto Rico.

What is Building Puentes?

Breaking through chasms that divide us and building bridges with fellow Lutheran siblings on the mainland and on the islands affected is the number one focus of this ministry.

The three synods came together to create Building Puentes in 2017 just after Hurricane Maria devastated the Caribbean. In 2018 and 2019, a Pastors retreat was held in Puerto Rico to provide support, rest and sabbath time from the pulpit for the many leaders who have been walking alongside their communities since the storm.

From the Aftermath of Hurricane Maria

Recovery on Caribbean islands after Hurricane Maria was pressing and challenging. Local leaders had been working tirelessly given their new reality.

Videographer Kristina Diaz created the video below to provide a perspective on what is no longer in the headlines.
