Synod Podcast Episode 3 – To be (or not to be) Called

Pastor Julie Bringman, Katie Evans, and Carrie Pritts join Bishop Leila Ortiz to delve into how they have felt God stirring and moving in their lives, and how they formalized their listening during a six-month period of discernment.

As they felt the nudge of the Spirit, each of these women took the leap to of faith to participate in a discernment cohort offered by the Metro D.C. Synod. Not all discernment leads to enrolling in a seminary or a rostered call, yet the Spirit is still at work.

Our world can be quite loud and distracting. How and where do you find space to “turn it off” and to intentionally listen for God’s call?

Guest Bios:

Julie Bringman serves as Pastor at Hope Lutheran Church and Student Center in College Park, Maryland.  She loves working in the church because she knows the church to be a place where God meets each of us just as we are.  As a part of ongoing pastoral and relational ministry, Julie is currently leading a discernment process with her congregation around a major property redevelopment.  She also enjoys the quieter, conversational parts of ministry.  Julie is a graduate of The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg and now lives in Washington, DC, with her husband and their young children.

 

 

Katie Evans (she/her) is a seminary student at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary where she is earning a MA in Spirituality and Social Change with concentrations in Evangelism and Justice, and Climate Justice and Faith. She is currently in the candidacy process for Word and Service through the Metro D.C. Synod. Katie first connected with the ELCA through Lutheran Campus Ministry at the University of Maryland. She deepened this connection through Young Adults in Global Mission where she served in the Jerusalem/West Bank program in 2018-2019. Katie’s faith and passion for social justice are inextricably woven together, and they  speak to her call as a future deacon.

 

 

Carrie Pritts (she/ her) hails from Mechanicsville, Virginia and has lived in the DC Metro area for 16 years.  She completed her Master of Divinity from Wesley Theological Seminary in 2015 with a concentration in Pastoral Counseling and Bioethics.  In July 2019, Carrie joined the staff of Augustana Lutheran Church as their Director of Children and Family Ministries.  When not working for the church, she also is a Nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician currently working for a local independent pharmacy in Alexandria, Virginia.  Carrie enjoys finding ways to make her two vocations work together.  When not working, she enjoys jigsaw puzzles, reading, and spending time with her cats, Cat, Samus, and Ripley.
