A new congregation at last!

Pr. Fogi signs the new congregation's Charter

In a sanctuary overflowing with people, the Oromo Resurrection Evangelical Church in Kensington, Md. voted on Sun., Oct. 14, 2012 to adopt a constitution and become the newest ELCA congregation in the Metro D.C. Synod.

Dozens signed a Charter on archival quality paper, and thanks and praise was given to God and the Holy Spirit who gathered and sustained the church from the beginning. After 10 years in development, the Rev. Teka Fogi, the former Mission Developer, was called to serve as the congregation’s first pastor.

Oromo is language of Ethiopia where the Lutheran church has grown into the millions.

The building where the celebration was held was gifted to the congregation for $50,000 when Resurrection Lutheran Church voted to procedurally “close as an act of mission.” In gratitude for the great gift, what was then known as the Oromo Christian Fellowship changed its name to the Oromo Resurrection Evangelical Church. The legacy of Gospel ministry will be carried on through this new congregation. Thanks and praise be to God!

During the synod’s annual Reformation Service, Oromo Resurrection Evangelical Church will be formally received. The service will be held at Washington National Cathedral on Sun., Oct. 28 at 4:00 p.m.
