Local & Global Accompaniment

Advocacy

Our faith calls us to learn more and speak out on issues affecting our vulnerable neighbors and the forces threatening God’s beloved creation. The ELCA Advocacy office located within our Synod and very close to the Nation’s capital. 

Building Puentes

Building Puentes means building bridges – and is the name of a commitment between the ELCA Caribbean, Delaware-Maryland, and Metro D.C. Synods to build relationships with the congregations in Puerto Rico and the Virginia Islands through work trips and financial aid.

Companion Synods

Companion Synod relationships exists for the purpose of strengthening one another for life and mission within the body of Christ. Through mutual prayer, study and the exchange of pastors, leaders, visitors and resources, we open our eyes to the global challenge that Christ offers us today.

Creation Justice

Connecting congregations and members of the synod with resources, partnerships, and communities to help them live out their baptismal calling to care for others and all of God’s beloved creation.

Disaster Response

Lutheran Disaster Response provides immediate response and financial support to disasters in the U.S and around the world. 

Ecumenical & Inter-Religious Relations

The EIRC committee works towards unity among Christians as well as promoting mutual understanding and cooperation between Christians and people of other religions.

Gifts of Hope

Gifts of Hope is an alternative gift-giving program and ministry to help people in need regardless of their faith or religious affiliation.

Global Missions

Through advocacy for peace through the Middle East Working Group, ELCA Global church sponsorships, Gifts of Hope, local ELCA World Hunger efforts and other activities, congregations are enabled to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ across the globe.

Refugee Support

Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) have a mission to be a witness to God’s love for all people. They stand with and advocate for migrants and refugees, transforming communities through ministries of service and justice.

New & Renewing Missions Table

The New & Renewing Missions Table supports leaders and congregations who want to engage in holy experimenting in their context for the sake of the gospel. We would love to partner with you as you develop ideas and look for funding.

Transformational Leadership

Racial Equity

As the sins of racism and white supremacy continue to plague our nation and our Church,  the Metro D.C. Synod Racial Equity Team works to provide Spirit-filled spaces for conversation and listening, educational materials and impactful resources for church leaders.

Faith in Action- Racial Equity Network

The Racial Equity Network was formed in conjunction with the synod’s Racial Equity Team to provide a dedicated space to share the joys, struggles and opportunities in this most holy work for racial equity and justice in the world.

Stewardship

Don’t let the only time your congregation talks about money be when you ask people to give. Utilize resources and best practices to build a culture of generosity in your congregation. 

Vocational Ministry

For anyone experiencing the stirrings of the Spirit or a call to ministry, the Metro D.C. Candidacy Committee provides an intentional journey of discernment and support. You will be given space to ask hard questions and ponder what God is calling you to next! 

Wellness & Wholeness

The Wellness and Wholeness team offers guidance, resources and support for church rostered leadership to continue to stay healthy in their calls to ministry.

Synod Women’s Organization

If you identify as a woman, you are invited to gather with women from Maryland, Northern Virginia, and DC, to share in service, friendship, and fellowship. 

Reconciling in Christ

In 1989, the Metro D.C. Synod adopted an affirmation of welcome for gay and lesbian Christians, thus being recognized by ReconcilingWorks.org as a welcoming Synod to the LGTBQ+ community. In 1991, the Metro D.C. Synod assembly voted to accept and affirm homosexual persons as rostered ministers to serve in the church.

Youth & Family

Campus Ministry

There are more than 20 universities within the Metro D.C. synod, each bringing a unique opportunity for ministry and service to students trying to identify who and what they are called to be.

Outdoor Ministry

We are incredibly fortunate to have two wonderful camps and retreat centers near the Metro D.C. Synod for our congregations and families to experience incredible God’s creation! Learn more about what Caroline Furnace & Mar-Lu-Ridge has to offer! 

Youth & Families

Through a partnership with the Delaware-Maryland Synod, we help households become places of living faith by providing resources, encouraging youth to become leaders, and equipping congregations for inter-generational ministry.
